The wellbeing of our staff is hugely important to us at AJS.
According to an NHS survey, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England. And, sadly, the outlook is significantly worse within the construction sector.
A 2020 CIOB report found that, during the past year alone, 97% of construction workers had felt stressed, 87% had experienced anxiety and 70% had experienced depression. More concerning still, suicide rates amongst construction workers are 3.7 times higher than the national average.
AJS is determined to help ensure our team does not contribute to these statistics. As part of this intention, our Head of Health & Safety and one of our Contracts Managers have chosen to qualify as Mental Health First Aiders. They will be providing our staff with a compassionate listening ear and signposting them towards appropriate services when needed. We’re grateful for their willingness to take on this additional role and offer support to their colleagues.
We have also introduced other ways to alleviate workplace stress; whether that is through training and education; or simply by providing relaxing breakout spaces and opportunities for teams to talk.
